The Child Protection Department of the International Rescue Committee's Afghanistan (IRC-A) has established Safe Healing and Learning Spaces (SHLS) in Lashkargah city (Fasli Bolan and Musa Khan Villages) to provide access to vulnerable children, including those with disabilities, who are living in conflict and crisis settings. The SHLS is a secure, caring, and expected place where children and adolescents can learn, develop, and be protected.
Each SHLS has at least two classrooms where trained facilitators conduct social-emotional learning (SEL) sessions on a weekly schedule. The SEL curriculum is designed to support children between the ages of 6-11 to cope with stress and build knowledge, attitudes, and skills to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
The IRC-A is working at the community level to ensure access to vulnerable children by establishing SHLS. Through these spaces, children can receive the support they need to overcome the challenges they face in conflict and crisis settings. The SHLS provides a safe space for children to learn and grow, allowing them to develop the skills necessary to cope with stress and build resilience.
The IRC-A's efforts to establish SHLS are a crucial step towards providing support to vulnerable children in Afghanistan. The organization is committed to ensuring that all children have access to education and the opportunity to reach their full potential. With the establishment of SHLS, the IRC-A is making a significant contribution towards achieving this goal.
